What is EMDR?

Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) is a psychological treatment that's been found to reduce the symptoms of PTSD as well as successfully treat other mood disorders.

EMDR is a psychotherapy that helps the individual to process memories that remain unprocessed causing the sufferer to experience unpleasant and often distressing or disturbing symptoms such as flashbacks, nightmares, and changes in our mood.

Why an EMDR intensive?

EMDR intensives are prolonged sessions, anywhere between 3-6 hours/day, for 2-4 days over the course of a short period of time. Intensives are an accelerated form of treatment, designed to promote faster relief of distressing symptoms.

Just as EMDR is a very different approach to psychotherapy, an EMDR intensive is a very different approach to providing EMDR treatment.  Because of the “rewiring” and truly healing effect of EMDR, an intensive can work in ways that are not possible utilizing standard talk-therapy techniques.

With EMDR processing, we can desensitize negative feelings and change the negative belief about the self that has been encoded into the memory in order to “rewire” the brain and truly heal the individual.

This means much more material can be processed and healed much more quickly in an Intensive session than is possible in traditional weekly therapy.

What does an EMDR intensive session look like?

Intensive sessions are virtual and designed exclusively with the therapist who will be providing treatment, based on the needs and goals of the client. The first step is scheduling a free 15 minute phone consultation to determine if you might be a good fit for EMDR intensives.

How much time do I need to schedule?

If you would like to explore the possibility of an EMDR intensive, the first step is scheduling a free 15 minute consultation to determine if intensives are a good fit for your needs. If you and your EMDR intensive therapist decide that you are a good candidate, the next step would be to schedule a 3-hour assessment and resourcing appointment. At the assessment and resourcing session, you and your EMDR intensive therapist will design treatment according to your needs and goals. During this session, you will also work together to determine the approximate duration of your EMDR intensive treatment.

How much will it cost?

The cost of an EMDR intensive is $250/hour.

Do I have to live in Wisconsin to do an EMDR Intensive?

We offer virtual EMDR intensives to clients in the states of Wisconsin, Minnesota and Florida, as well as to clients living in countries throughout the world. Clients living internationally (outside of the US) are able to schedule EMDR intensives but will need to consult with the therapist to determine if there are any licensing regulations regarding their location that would prevent EMDR intensives.

Which therapists offer EMDR intensives?

Ashley Riley currently offers EMDR intensives. Click here to see Ashley’s profile.

Who are the EMDR intensives suited for?

While the therapist and client will discuss suitability and appropriateness for EMDR intensives, clients most suitable for this type of work are not currently experiencing suicidal ideation, self-harm, or intent to harm others, nor are they in a mental health crisis. Suitable candidates must demonstrate emotional and mental stability, due to the nature of the work and intensity. Clients who are not able to emotionally regulate effectively on their own are not suitable candidates for EMDR intensives.

How do I prepare for an EMDR intensive?

Clients will receive a workbook with specific content and instructions aimed at supporting them in the preparation of the EMDR Intensive.

Benefits of EMDR intensives:

  1. Experience life-changing results in days, not months or years

  2. Cost-effective, since the therapy is concentrated and focused - you’re likely to not need long term therapy

  3. More accessible: instead of needing to fit a weekly therapy session into your schedule, you will be able to see results in a shorter amount of time
